About the University
Public research university Tennessee Technological University, also known as Tennessee Tech, is located in Cookeville, Tennessee, in the United States. Earlier, when it was established as a private college, it was known as the University of Dixie and Tennessee Polytechnic Institute. A board of trustees oversees the university, which is affiliated with the Tennessee Board of Regents. It is listed as belonging to the category “R2: Doctoral Universities – High Research Activity”.
Although degrees in education, liberal arts, agriculture, nursing, and other fields of study can be pursued at Tennessee Tech, the university focuses a specific emphasis on undergraduate education in fields linked to engineering, technology, and computer science. In addition, engineering, education, business, and the liberal arts all provide graduate and doctoral degrees. More than 10,000 students are enrolled at Tennessee Tech as of the 2018 fall semester (9,006 undergraduate and 1,180 graduate students), and the university’s campus, which spans 235 acres (95 ha) and is concentrated along Dixie Avenue in northern Cookeville, contains 87 buildings.
The athletic teams for Tennessee Tech, known as the Golden Eagles, participate in NCAA Division I as representatives of the Ohio Valley Conference. The University of Dixie, often known as Dixie College, was founded in 1909 and began conducting classes in 1912. This is where Tennessee Tech’s roots lie.
However, due to finance and enrollment issues, the campus was given to regional authorities. The campus came under the administration of the state government in 1915, and the new institution was given the name Tennessee Polytechnic Institute. During the 1916–17 academic year, the new school had just 13 staff members and 19 students, and it was located on just 18 acres of undeveloped property with one administrative building and two student residences. Due to the school’s rural location, pupils also helped with food preparation by working in the school garden. The first class received four-year bachelor’s degrees in 1929. When Tennessee Polytechnic Institute’s name was changed to Tennessee Technological University in 1965, it was given university status.
In total, Tennessee Tech offers 44 bachelor’s degree programs, 20 graduate degrees, and doctoral programs in environmental sciences, engineering, and education. TTU has a strong emphasis on STEM degrees while still offering support for more conventional areas like nursing and liberal arts.
The Tennessee Tech athletic department participates in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision and is a part of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). The school’s athletic teams are known as the Golden Eagles, and their mascot is Awesome Eagle. Their team colors are purple and gold.
