About Université Laval and Scholarship
Université Laval, with roots dating back to 1663, holds a distinguished place in the annals of Canadian education. The institution’s inception is intertwined with the founding of the Grand Séminaire de Québec in 1663 and the Petit Séminaire in 1668 by François de Montmorency-Laval, the first Bishop of New France and a member of the House of Laval.
Initially focused on training priests for service in New France during the French Regime, Université Laval underwent a transformative shift after the British Conquest of 1760. The British, recognizing the need for broader education in Canada, expanded the institution’s scope to encompass the liberal arts. This shift was a significant development, providing French Canadians, who previously lacked opportunities for higher education, with a chance to pursue advanced studies.
The pivotal moment came in 1852 when the Séminaire de Québec, under the leadership of Louis Casault, secured a royal charter from Queen Victoria, endorsed by Lord Elgin, the Governor-General of the Province of Canada. This charter bestowed upon the institution the status of Université Laval, complete with the “rights and privileges of a university.” Pope Benedict XV further affirmed the plan, granting authorization to establish theology chairs and confer degrees.
In a subsequent chapter of expansion, Université Laval opened a second campus in Montreal in 1878. This Montreal campus eventually evolved into the Université de Montréal on May 8, 1919, through a papal writ from Pope Benedict XV. The year 1971 marked another significant milestone, as a second charter consolidated all authority under the Université Laval council.
Driven by a commitment to academic excellence and international engagement, Université Laval introduces a noteworthy program. This initiative aims to foster academic brilliance by offering scholarships to foreign students from African countries who are admitted to undergraduate programs at Université Laval. The scholarship, amounting to $5,000 per year, is renewable once, contingent upon meeting the faculty’s criteria for excellence and receiving a recommendation from the research director, subject to faculty approval.
