Application Process For The Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program

1. Eligibility Criteria

At the time of enrollment, prospective candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent, from an accredited university. They must also have outstanding academic accomplishments, the ability to take on leadership roles, and a strong desire to have a positive influence.

Deadline For Application:

Knight-Hennessy Scholars – The Knight-Hennessy Scholars application deadline is October 11, 2023, 1:00 pm Pacific Time.

The KHS application deadline is the same for all international students who will be applying. This is regardless of the Stanford graduate degree program to which you will apply.

NOTE: All KHS applicants must apply to the graduate program by December 1, 2023, or the program’s standard deadline, whichever is earlier.

Eligibility For The Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program:

There are no restrictions whatsoever to the international students applying for the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program. The age, college or university, field of study, or career aspirations of the applicant is not a limiting factor. The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program encourages citizens and residents of all countries to apply. Applicants are not required to seek endorsements from colleges, universities, or other institutions.

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program provides two baseline eligibility requirements. They are:

Requirement 1: Admission to Stanford

Application for the Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS) must be accompanied by application, acceptance, and enrollment into a full-time Stanford graduate degree program which includes, but is not limited to, DMA, JD, MA, MBA, MD, MFA, MPP, MS, or PhD programs. Out of the four conditions listed below, applicants must meet at least ONE:

1. You are applying to Stanford’s full-time graduate program and KHS separately, to start both in the same year.

2. You will apply to KHS to begin both in the same year, having already been offered and deferred admission to a full-time Stanford graduate degree program.

3. As a current graduate student at Stanford, you would want to apply to add a second full-time program at Stanford so that you can begin both KHS and the new program in the same year.

4. You are a first-year PhD student at Stanford University, and you plan to apply to KHS so that you can begin your studies there in your second year of PhD enrollment.

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program promises to give priority consideration to those who will spend at least two years studying at Stanford. Applicants should also note that there are no quotas by discipline or program.

Please note that a small number of Stanford graduate degree programs are not eligible for Knight-Hennessy Scholars:

Applicants to the Honors Cooperative Program (https://online.stanford.edu/masters-degrees)
Applicants to the Master of Liberal Arts (https://applygrad.stanford.edu/portal/programs)
Applicants to the Doctor of Science of Law (JSD) (https://law.stanford.edu/education/degrees/advanced-degree-programs/doctor-of-science-of-law-jsd/)
Current Stanford students applying for coterminal graduate study.
Current Stanford Ph.D. students adding an MA or MS degree in their current discipline.

Requirement 2: Undergraduate Degree Date

Applicants must have earned a U.S. Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a college or university of recognized standing, in January 2017 or later. This is for applicants who want to join the cohort in 2014.

Applicants who served in the military are given an extended eligibility window of two years in acknowledgment of longer service commitments. Such applicants must have earned a degree in January 2015 or later for them to be able to enroll in the 2024 program. Current college students are eligible for the scholarship program, as long they will earn their first degree by September 2024. The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program does not preference based on the recency of the degree within the eligibility window.
